GIS / GPS Mapping

GIS / GPS Mapping

Handheld DeviceColumbia Forest Resources utilizes the latest and best technology to provide an  array of GPS and GIS services. On the simple end of the spectrum of services, we  can estimate acreage, accurately locate and map features, such as creeks or roads,  and create professional maps.

In more advanced GIS mapping applications, we collect data for different features  mapped using GPS. For example, a timber stand is mapped using GPS, then, we  will determine the stand’s acreage, age, species mix, timber volumes, access, current value, operability, site index,  and some 30 other characteristics of the stand. This data is inputted and is now a part of the map. This can  be done for any variety of features, such as roads, creeks, power lines, agricultural fields, and so on. The features  may be different, but you are still collecting valuable and useful data about each feature.

When completed this information is a very powerful tool to be used in resource management. Lets say you are  the owner of a 500-acre tract of timberland and this tract consists of 10 - 50-acre stands of timber varying in age  and species. Then, next February, the price of Pine Pulpwood hits all-time record highs and you want to cash on  the current market conditions. In an instant, we can produce a map of your land showing the stands with the highest  volumes of Pine Pulpwood and the probability of being able to successfully harvest this timber given the current  weather conditions. You know how much Pine Pulpwood you have to offer and exactly where it is. Valuable?

Now imaging that instead of owning a 500-acre tract , you own 50,000 acres consisting of 20 tracts located in 10  counties, each having 10 or more timber stands. GIS is the most powerful for resource management.
